The Toxic Town – Online Course
Netflix can have the drama, we’ve got the facts!
In this session, Henry Crosby will introduce the partnership between Martello and Ashfield Solutions, alongside Ashfield’s Technical Director, Scott Ratcliffe, who is a highly experienced contaminated land specialist who has assessed and remediated some of the UK’s most complex and challenging sites, including gasworks, filling stations, chemical works, refineries, landfills, and steelworks.
We will cover:
- Why contamination is back in the headlines: From Erin Brockovich and Dark Waters to Netflix’s Toxic Town and BBC’s Britain’s Toxic Legacy.
- Why this matters: Contamination is a highly emotive subject, but effective frameworks and experienced professionals can identify and manage risks.
- The importance of vigilance: Underfunded Local Planning Authorities and overstretched regulators mean things can slip through the net.
- A brief overview of the UK’s industrial legacy: Common historic land uses and contamination sources.
- How contamination impacts people and property: Introducing a simple Conceptual Site Model to explain exposure pathways.
- The regulatory context: A summary of the Part 2AÂ regime and how contamination is considered in the planning process.
- What can go wrong: Referencing common cases in the UK.
- Typical contaminated sites: Examples of sites frequently identified through Martello reports, including gasworks, steelworks, and landfills.
- Case studies: How Martello and Ashfield collaborate to assess and manage risk, including the Llanwern Steelworks site.
- Summary: Contamination risk can be managed. The key is vigilance, good data, and the right expertise.
